Driver Services

Illinois driver’s licenses, instruction permits and identification cards that have an expiration date between January 1, 2020 and December 31, 2021 have been extended until January 1, 2022. Commercial driver’s licenses and commercial learner’s permits are excluded from this extension.

The Driver Services Department issues licenses to more than 8.5 million Illinois drivers and more than 3 million photo identification cards to drivers and non-drivers at more than 130 locations.

In addition, Driver's Services maintains driving records and takes administrative action against unsafe drivers.

Pursuant to Title VI of the federal Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Driver Services Department of the Illinois Secretary of State operates its programs without regard to race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability, including income level and limited English proficiency and, pursuant to the Illinois Human Rights Act, operates its programs without regard to religion, order of protection, marital or military status, sexual orientation, pregnancy or unfavorable discharge from military service.
